WHY SOME OF US CHRISTIANS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS RETURNING BACK TO EGYPT

We all know how God, through  Moses, led the children of Israel out of Egypt.  We also know that they were in the wilderness for approximately 40 years because they did not believe what God had said with regards to them going into the promise land.  But why did they not believe?  They did not believe because even though they were led out of Egypt, they really never left it behind. Let’s take a look at that.

Besides being a country, Egypt represented slavery and bondage to the children of Israel. The children of Israel had a front row seat in watching God move on their behalf in delivering them out of Egypt (bondage).  Not only that, the Bible tells us that they left Egypt with silver and gold (Psalm 105:37).  (Now if that is not deliverance, I don’t know what is!)

God performed many signs and wonders for them while they were in the wilderness.   Although they were delivered from slavery, they still had a slave mentality.  Oftentimes, they wanted to go back to Egypt not because it was comfortable, but rather that environment was familiar to them.  Right at the point of them going into the promise land, the prevailing thought was that they were as grasshoppers and could not defeat the giants in the land (See Numbers 13). As a result of that type of slave thinking, the children of Israel continued to roam in the wilderness for another 40 years before a new generation could go into the promise land.

Now let’s jump over this side of the Cross.  Why are we still in Egypt?  We pray to our Father for deliverance all the time and yet we still are walking in circles just like the children of Israel.

Why go back to Egypt?

Has God delivered you from the bars and clubs, but yet you still need a night out?

Why go back to Egypt?

Has God delivered you from your ex, but you still have their number programmed in your cell phone, have their e-mail address or you drive by their home on occasion?

Why go back to Egypt?

Has God delivered you from smoking and drinking, however you still have a pack and a bottle stashed somewhere “just in case”?

Why go back to Egypt?

Has God delivered you from the feeling of low self-esteem, but when you get around certain folk, you revert back?

Why go back to Egypt?

Has God delivered you from your spending habits and yet you still can’t pass up a “good sale”?

---------------------------

Each one of us has our own Egypt to contend with, our own issues that keep us walking in circles.

We must be willing to leave our Egypt behind.   In order for us to do that, we must do what Paul said in Philippians 3:13, which was:

“...forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead”.

Once we do that, we will be able to stop walking in circles like the children of Israel and go into the promises God has for us.

What are your thoughts about going in and out of bondage.  I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
