Paul provides good discussion about speaking in tongues in 1 Corinthians 14. While that piece of scripture compares and contrasts speaking in tongues with prophesying, the practical lesson in it is that we speak more effectively to God when we speak in tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:2 says:
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
Now that does not mean that when we pray in our natural language, that we are not speaking to God. Anytime we are praying, we are speaking to God, but here is an interesting observation drawn from 1 Corinthians 14:14 which says:
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
Have you ever noticed that when we pray, we tend to edit it along the way? I mean to say that we are always trying to find the right word or right phrase to say to God when we talk to Him instead of just saying whatever that is on our hearts plainly.
I believe it is only natural that we do that because we are taught to use correct grammar when speaking. But when we pray in tongues, our natural mind cannot get involved and edit because it cannot understand what we are saying. In addition, the enemy can’t interrupt us when we speak in tongues because he doesn’t know what we are praying about either.
As a result, we are able to communicate with our Heavenly Father in a more effective manner.
Take care, God bless and be an instrument for Jesus!!
